‘SPOT A SPOT’ SKIN CANCER DETECTION PROGRAM TO HELP SAVE A LIFE

Australian SPF brand Airyday joins a team of leading industry partners in launching a groundbreaking new training program for hairdressers and those in the beauty industry to assist in the early detection of skin cancer.

Developed by TAFE NSW in partnership with the Australian Melanoma Research Foundation, Hair and Beauty Australia (HABA) and Keune Haircosmetics, the ‘Spot A Spot’ program offers practical information about what makes a spot suspicious and educates on different ways to start a conversation with a client, with the aim of increasing early detection rates in skin cancer.

The online training course takes less than an hour and can easily be completed on a mobile phone.

Profits of the course will be donated back to the Australian Melanoma Research Foundation.

Despite having the highest rates of skin cancer in the world - it is expected around 16,800 Australians will be diagnosed with melanoma this year, with 90% of cases successfully treated if caught early enough - not enough Aussies are booking in for annual skin checks with a doctor or dermatologist. This course aims to increase early detection by educating those at the coalface - our hairdressers, barbers and beauticians.

This “Spot a Spot” course is the first of its kind to target hairdressers, barbers and beauticians to increase early awareness and prevention of skin cancer. The course content has been prepared by TAFE NSW in consultation with industry and medical specialists.

Helping the industry to develop the skills to recognise a suspicious spot and confidently talk with their clients about skin changes has the potential to significantly contribute to reducing the incidence of melanoma.

Course Live from June 2023.
